Deb's Diddies... A Wandering Mind

 MOVIE TIME
Back to Full Blog

I went to rent a movie the other day and was asked what my favorite movie was. Standing there amongst the racks of videos, I looked around, and gave it some serious thought. I realized that there was no way I could actually say I had only one favorite. I’ve enjoyed so many (and hated just as many as well) that it'd be hard to choose just one.

Before I met my husband though, I was lucky if I saw one movie a week. I was just never into watching movies (or television for that matter). I’ve always preferred to read. But my husband is...big-time...and by association I now watch more movies than I ever did. His library of movies is so big I once suggested we could make extra money by renting out his movies; because he had as many as the small general store in town (maybe more). He wasn’t as enthusiastic about that as I was.

His favorite movies tend to lean towards action/adventure, sci-fi, war and the occasional horror movie. I’m partial to dramas, comedies and the occasional chick-flick. So, naturally his library is way bigger than mine, in fact mine is so small I can actually list the movies in my collection. Here they are: Almost Famous, The Doors, Mask, Mystic Pizza, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Forest Gump, Big Trouble in Little China, Elizabeth, Pulp Fiction/Get Shorty/Be Cool and too many exercise/yoga/aerobic videos to list (which, unfortunately, have so much dust on them you can barely see the covers).

But, if I did have to pick, I’d have to choose Scent of a Woman, Chocolat and Mask. Why these? Well, Scent of a Woman stars Al Pacino, what other reason is there? He’s been my all-time fav actor since The Godfather. Nobody does tough guy as well as him. Although he played a blind man in Scent of a Woman, he was still tough as nails with a no-fooling around attitude. He also showed his sensitive side when he hit the dance floor and Tango-ed with the neglected young lady at the next table. Chocolat because it’s every woman’s fantasy rolled into one. A gypsy scoundrel played by Johnny Depp, who romances a woman who owns a chocolate shop. Depp + Chocolate + Independent Business Woman = great movie. And Mask, because Cher is absolutely perfect in this part. She plays cool, hot biker chick with an unexpected soft side better than anyone on the planet. She was made for that part. And Sam Elliot as her only one true love is also perfectly cast. The movie is full of heart, love, and unexpected kindness. Although her son has a disability, the fact that he’s the strong one in the family is beautifully played out.

I’m pretty sure none of my favs would land at the top my husband’s fav list, he’d probably wrinkle up his nose at my choices and say, “ugh, chick flicks.” But, he’d be happy to learn that I do have an action/adventure fav. Heat starring Al Pacino (told you he was one of my all-time favs) and the other ultimate tough guy, Robert Deniro. Putting these two actors in a movie was a stroke of pure genius by some great casting director. Watching them play cat and mouse against one another was the best.

Think I’ll go watch a movie.

My favourite movie is one no one but myself ever heard of, "They Came To Condura" with Gary Cooper and Rita Hayworth.

It's a big action movie but concerned with solving a philosophical puzzle; What is courage?

However, the version I love isn't the one you can rent from Blockbuster. That one hasn't survived the test of time well at all. The acting is corny and predictable, the dialogs is unbelievable, everybody looks just too clean and pretty and the music is just plain annoying. No, the version I love is the one in my head, the memory I have of a brilliant film. Sorry but that version you'll never get to see.

Happy Birthday Deb....It was great to stop by and catch up with you. Al Pacino is amazing. I love him in "Scent of a Woman" His driving scene and his standing up to the school scene were the best.

Here's hoping that winter is moving past you and spring is on the way.

I'm not much of an old movie fan, explorer. I don't even think I've ever even watched an old black and white.

The karate kid, illumination guy. Wow, it's been like forever since I saw that one. If we're going that far back, how's about Saturday Night Fever (when John Travolta was hot and sexy)?

I too watch more movies now and my hubby's collection is huge and various. I too can never choose a favorite, but I think if made to, I have to say Sleeples in Seattle was my first true love.

Happy Belated Birthday! I agree, Mask was one heck of a movie, and Cher was fantastic in that role. I saw her once in a movie on Showtime (yeeeeaaars ago) titled "Come Back To The Five And Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean" and she was great in it!

WP, I also enjoyed Sleepless in Seattle. It was a sweet, romantic comedy.

Really, slick I can't remember any movie that she wasn't good in. But maybe I haven't seen them all. Remember Mermaids? She played single mom to two girls and of course was the town pariah. Great movie and again she was perfectly cast.

When I was a little rubble...(a pebble)...in my teens, I loved and could relish horror movies! Now...YIKES! I mean, truly, if the SAW movies came out in the late 70's I would have BEEN THERE, in the front row!

Now I'm like aghast with those movies!! HATE that genre!!!

So my movie tastes have changed. Fiance and I like watching period pieces and British movies and old classics; anything with Audry Hepburn! He's more refined in his tastes. We love retro movies too.

Anyway...I LOVED Chocolat...we really loved the message and hey, wasn't that what's her name...oh man, Leslie Caron, yeh, Leslie, we just watched Gigi a few weeks ago...

*sigh*

There's some beautifully romantic movies out there...we intend to get to them in our next 40 years together!

I like Johnny Depp!!! But when he kisses someone, I keep thinking...SMOKERS BREATH! He's a big time smoker!

I can't watch horror movies either, rubble. I've never been to, I spook too easily and am prone to nightmares. The last horror movie I watched was The Ring and I was completely freaked out by the entire thing.

And truthfully if Depp was coming in for a landing on my lips then probably his smoker's breath would be the last thing on my mind.

OMG pst4911, I don't think I even know those movies. I've never been much of a classic/vintage movie fan. I prefer more modern movies.
